Department of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics, Nabadwip Vidyasagar College, established in 1942, is one of the longstanding academic departments of the college. Over the decades, the department has been committed to providing quality education in mathematics and nurturing students' logical reasoning, analytical ability, problem-solving skills, and interest in mathematical sciences.
The department currently has four full-time faculty members, who are highly dedicated to teaching, research, student mentoring, and academic development. The faculty members are:
- Dr. Debi Prasad Acharya – Associate Professor
- Dr. Samiran Senapati – Associate Professor
- Dr. Chinmay Biswas – Assistant Professor & Head of the Department
- Dr. Bablu Chandra Das – Assistant Professor.
As per NEP 2020, the Department offers Major Courses, Minor Courses, Multidisciplinary Courses (MDC) and Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) under various disciplines. The students will choose major, minor, multidisciplinary, and other courses at the time of their admission. The Department aims to strengthen the academic potential of the students, as it provides flexibility in the choice of courses offered beyond the framework of the respective disciplines of study. The undergraduate degree programmes of either 3 or 4-year duration, has multiple entries and exit points and reentry options, with appropriate certifications such as ➢ Certificate after completing 1 year (2 semesters) of study in the chosen fields of study. ➢ Diploma after 2 years (4 semesters) of study. ➢ Bachelor after a 3-year (6 semesters) programme of study. ➢ Bachelor (Hons. with / without Research) after a 4-year (8 semesters) programme of study.
Academic and Student Activities:
The Department of Mathematics regularly organizes various academic and co-curricular activities for the overall development of students. An Educational Tour is organized every year, providing students with opportunities to learn beyond the conventional classroom environment and to develop broader academic and social perspectives.
The department also organizes a Student Seminar every year, where students get the opportunity to present mathematical topics, develop their presentation skills, exchange ideas, and gain confidence in communicating mathematical concepts.
Students of the department actively participate in the College Wall Magazine Competition and have achieved First Position several times, demonstrating their creativity, enthusiasm, and active participation in the cultural and intellectual activities of the college.
Research and Academic Excellence:
The faculty members of the department are highly dedicated to their respective fields of teaching and research. Their active involvement in research has contributed significantly to the academic profile of the department. Collectively, the faculty members have published more than 120 research papers in national and international journals, reflecting their sustained commitment to research and academic excellence.
The department encourages students to develop research aptitude and pursue higher studies in mathematics and related areas. Through dedicated teaching, research activities, student seminars, educational tours, and participation in college-level activities, the department strives to create a vibrant and intellectually stimulating academic environment.
After completing their undergraduate degrees, students from the Mathematics Department pursue higher education including postgraduate studies and research at various national institutions such as IITs, NITs, IISERs, and central universities.
Many of our students have also secured government jobs in sectors like Banking, SSC, Railways, and PSC after completing their graduation.
With its rich academic heritage dating back to 1942, the Department of Mathematics continues to contribute to the academic growth of students and to the overall development of Nabadwip Vidyasagar College, with a continued commitment to quality education, research, innovation, and holistic student development.
