At the outset of the new year, 2020 our department (of English), N.V.C had organised a 3 day 2 night trip to Duars. Duars is a wonderful place in Northern W.B, and we had been longing to be there for some time. Finally, we made it happen and started our journey by train in the chilling afternoon of 3. 1. 2020. We boarded the train (Teesta Torsa) at Nabadwip, heading to Jalpaiguri. We enjoyed much in the train over the 12 hours of journey, and at last we got off the train at Jalpaiguri station at 4:30 a.m. on 4th January. Three taxi reached the station and dropped us off at the hotel in the early morning. After reaching ” The Forest Resort” at Lataguri, we settled in our rooms and few moments later we got refreshed and had our morning tea and meal. It was so nice to feel the noiseless morning, and it was drizzling, making all of us upset about the following day. Fortunately the weather became clear and we started our first travel to “Teesta River Barrage” at Gajoldoba, where we enjoyed a beautiful sight, the blending scenery of technology and nature. The road during that journey was very clean and full of greenery, with beautiful trees on both sides. Again we reached the hotel to have the lunch and after few moments we headed towards “Gorumara National Park“. There, we rode on buffalo cart and from the “Medla Watch-tower” we behold the wide range of the sanctuary. From there, we went to be a part of the visitors of “aadivasi dance”at Budhram Forest Village in the southern part of the National park. With many wonderful experiences we arrived at the hotel and played a game called “Dumb Charades”, in which we were imitating the titles of the cinemas. In the dinner table we had the delicious food with great fun and then went to the world of dream.
Next day (5th January), after the refreshment and breakfast we got ready by 10:00 a.m. and set out for the second day trip by car. In that trip we visited various tourist spots, including- Murti ‘Jhalong’ ‘Bindu’ ‘Kumani Picnic Garden’ ‘Samsing Tea Garden’ and ‘Rocky Island’ . The roads towards’ Jhalong’ and ‘Bindu’ winded round, soared up, swooped down and they had been cut into the side of the hills so that on one side there was the hill and on other a sharp drop. We looked down into the valley below, most of which was covered with jungle. We went here and there every now and then, took photos, bought several local items and enjoyed the whole day. Further, we enjoyed a brief picnic at the ‘Kumani Picnic Garden‘ , and after a short while we entered into the tea garden, and for miles below us we could see, like a green carpet, the tidy foliage of the tea bushes. At the end of the day we visited ‘Rocky Island’, and on reaching the hotel we went for shopping, after the evening tea. The rest of the night was illuminated by the camp-fire where we had spent great moments.
Staying at Lataguri resort and doing “Gorumara Jungle Safari” is an invertible part of our Dooars tour. On 6th January, our last day, we explored the Jungle by Jeep Safari. It was a beautiful sight of the Safari when fog covered the total Jungle and few of us have seen that scenery only in movies.
On our way back, we, once again, had great fun in the train, before going back into the daily day routine. In a nutshell, it was a great tour and we all enjoyed the moments fully. (**A Memoir by Rajesh Mondal, a student of Semester-IV, 2020)
