Department of History

Nabadwip Vidyasagar College, established in 1942 prior to the independence of our motherland, commenced its history department shortly after the establishment of the college. Within a few years, the college introduced an honours course in the history department. The college was initially under the affiliation of Calcutta University since its inception. However, when Kalyani University was established in 1960, the college obtained affiliation with Kalyani University, in 1999. The history department in the initial year offered both higher secondary as well as bachelor’s degree courses. However, at present, the department focuses exclusively on Programme and Honours courses. From 2018-19 session, students have received the opportunity to follow a revised syllabus for their B.A. Honours/ Programme courses. This change was implemented due to the adoption of a semester-based Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) syllabus. Under the new system, the syllabus includes core courses (CC) that are essential to the discipline, as well as elective courses such as Discipline Specific Elective Course (DSE). In addition, students are offered specific subjects in the form of Generic Elective Course (GE), Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course (AECC), and Skill Enhancement Course (SEC). The implementation of the semester-based CBCS syllabus with various course categories and selection method aims at providing students with more comprehensive and diverse learning.

The Department of History comprises of six faculty members. Among them, one Associate Professor, three Assistant Professor are in a substantive post and two are State aided teaching faculty.

In addition to providing conventional education, the college also has dedicated faculties who regularly conduct smart classes to enhance the learning experience for students. These smart classes enable students to have a deeper understanding of the subjects, explore concepts through visual aids, and actively participate in the learning process. Through the use of technology and multimedia resources, the department strives to provide a modern and innovative approach to education, equipping students with the skills and wisdom required for the rapidly evolving world.

The Departmental wall magazine, namely ‘Anwesha’, is published regularly for several decades. This wall magazine serves as a platform for students to showcase the creative works. Alongside the Wall magazine, the Department of History also organizes student seminars where students can present their research findings, share their wisdom, and engage in academic discussions.

The efforts of the department and its students have been recognized, as it achieved the second position in the wall magazine competition in 2019 and 2022 respectively. This inter-college competition not only highlights the quality and impact of the creative essence of the students but also enables the students to gather information about our country’s history and also of the world.

Moreover, in the academic year 2021-2022 and 2022-2023, the Department of History organized an educational tour in Digha and Silk Route, Sikkim. The Zoological Survey Museum at Digha was of great importance as it enabled the students to know about the fauna of India. The recent Sikkim trip was aimed at providing a practical learning experience and exposure to historical and cultural sites related to the Silk Routes. Such initiatives helped students to broaden their knowledge and understanding of historical contexts beyond the confines of the classroom and also establishes a strong bonding between the teachers and the students.

The outgoing semester batch had been bid farewell by the students of the department, showing immense bond among them. The farewell celebration, organized by the existing students of the History Department, was a memorable and heartwarming event. It provided an opportunity for students to express their appreciation to their mentors, celebrate their achievements, and bid farewell to their college life. The event brought faculty, staff, and students together in a joyous atmosphere, fostering a sense of camaraderie and leaving everyone with cherished memories that will be treasured for years to come.
